How to Navigate Your Closet If You Have Gained Weight

We are all human! And sometimes our bodies change. A changing size can mean a changing wardrobe. But how exactly should you navigate your closet if you have gained weight?

#1 DO NOT beat yourself up about it. You deserve to look and feel your best everyday, regardless of your current size. Approach your closet with compassion, don't get down on yourself if certain pieces do not fit you right now and focus on figuring out what does fit and what you still feel good in.

#2 Store anything that does not currently fit. You want your wardrobe to only have pieces that fit you right now. This may mean that you have a smaller wardrobe than usual but that is ok. If you plan to get back to your current size you can store any pieces or you can donate them if you plan to stay where you are.

#3 Access what still fits and what you may need. Try on your clothes and see what does still fit you. Your sweaters, blouses and dresses may still fit but your jeans and dress pants may not. It is good to get clear with what you can still use and wear in your wardrobe.

#4 Purchase new pieces if necessary. If you do not plan to stay at your current size you can always purchase new pieces at a lower price point or second hand. I do not suggest investing in expensive pieces if you plan to get back down to where you were.

#5 Create new outfits. Out of the clothes that currently fit and any new pieces you brought into your wardrobe, start piecing together outfits. You should feel good in these outfits and they should be comfortable. Again, you may have less outfits than normal but that doesn't matter! You can just wear these outfits on rotation more. What is important is that you create outfits that you feel beautiful in today.

#6 Own clothes that accommodate fluctuating weights. Think wrap dresses and tops, flowy dresses and tops and pants with an elastic waist. Pieces like these can still we worn regardless of wether your lose or gain weight. They are also great for times you may be retaining more water (especially on your cycle) or after the holidays or a vacation.

Remember, your closet should house the clothes for your life today. Be kind to yourself, store anything that doesn't fit and piece together a few new outfits that you love and feel good in!
