What exactly is a capsule wardrobe?
Essentially, it is a collection of pieces that all work interchangeably with each other.
It allows you to create multiple outfits with very few items and own significantly less clothes.
Sounds like a dream wardrobe, right? A small collection of versatile pieces seemed like the answer to my closet confusion.
Except, it didn’t work for me.
Most of the research I did suggested I own certain pieces like a blazer, a white t-shirt, a leather jacket and striped sweater. Some of these pieces I liked while others didn’t look good on me.
I found that some tops went with some bottoms and others didn’t.
And although I was able to own less clothes, I could never remember the ’40 outfits these 15 pieces make’. Which left me rushed and still trying to figure out what to wear in the morning.
I felt boxed into to a certain style because everything had to go with each other.
And, like most closet methods, it sent me to the mall instead of my own closet.
After years of frustration with my own closet, I knew there had to be a better way. I finally just pieced together a few outfits, out of the clothes that I already owned and wore them on rotation. I started with work outfits to streamline my weekday mornings and it worked to well that I made outfits for the weekend and dressier ones for nights out. For the first time in my life, I felt like my closet was complete. I was able to wear my entire wardrobe, get ready quickly and always feel good in what I was wearing.
My method teaches you to actually go into your own closet first. Assess what still fits, what you still like and what looks best with what.
Once you have done this, THEN you can see what you might need to finish off an outfit or to update some of the pieces you no longer like.
If the capsule wardrobe works for you, great! I know it works for a lot of people. But if you have tried the capsule wardrobe and are still struggling with your closet, try the outfit method!
