First of all, what is the 10-item wardrobe?
The 10-item wardrobe is a wardrobe that contains 10 core pieces and and extra pieces to round them out.
When I first heard about this method of closet simplification, I was excited. The thought of only owning 10 pieces of clothing with a few extras, seemed like a minimalist dream.
But after trying multiple times to implement it, it did not work for me.
I didn't know whether a piece was a 'core item' or an 'extra'. I was obsessively trying to find the perfect '10 pieces' that all went together. And I could never remember all of the outfits the pieces made.
I also felt like some tops went with some bottoms, but others didn't. And that I was boxed into a style because everything had to go with each other.
Overall, the system did not help me simplify my closet. I was still left feeling like I needed to purchase more items and was rushed in the mornings trying to piece together a last minute outfit.
And this is how I enviably came up with my own system. By doing the work beforehand and piecing together outfits, I was able to go through my own clothes first without purchasing anything new. I knew exactly what went best with what and I was able to get ready quickly every morning because I had go-to styled outfits.
